Yucatecan Cantil, Agkistrodon russeolus

Photos by Kevin Zansler, May 2012.

The Cantil is basically the tropical moccasin, being in the same genus as the North American cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus).  It has a similar disposition, but is not as aquatic.

This specimen is from Consejo Town, Corozal District, Belize, and is in the living collection of The Vivarium, Belmopan, Belize, an educational project of Tony and Joe Garel.

There may well be more than one species currently recognized as one.  Populations from Mexico are black with little dorsal pattern.
